Rainbow Mountain

Overview:

The beautiful Rainbow Mountain in Ausangate Region in Peru used to be a relatively unknown trek. It became very popular a couple of years ago. Rainbow Mountain in Peru is also known as Vinicunca, which means ‘rainbow’ in Quechua, the ancient Inca language of Peru. The mountain gets its name from the many different colours displayed in its mountain peaks; the colors are there, thanks to the minerals in the soil of the mountains.

Itinerary

(this is a sample itinerary of the two-day trek; there are small differences between the different trek operators in Cusco)

The Rainbow Mountain hike starts very early in the morning: between 3.00 and 4.00 am. Return to Cusco is around 19.00.

From the start of the trail, you will climb for approximately 3 hours through stunning landscapes packed with llamas and alpacas, to finally reach the top of Rainbow Mountain or Vinicunca.

Tip!

If you don’t want to walk in the crowds or walk less, you can choose to do the alternative rainbow Mountain or Palccoyo Tour!
